Group vs. Private Instruction
Not sure whether group or private instruction is right for you? Jemadean discusses the merits of both group and private instruction in this quick guide to help you make a more informed decision.

Private instruction is the most detailed, quick, and efficient way to learn to dance. The lesson includes only you, or you and a partner, and the instructor. The instructor is focused on you, or you and your partner, to ensure that you are taught proper technique. Proper technique not only makes your dancing smoother and cleaner, but also allows you to execute, with a lot less effort, any new material that you acquire.

Group instruction is designed to provide new patterns and footwork, and to include the social aspect of the dance. Group class is a great place to meet others who are dancing at your same level, who in many circumstances, turn into practice partners and friends you see and dance with at the club. Very little technique is taught in group classes, in comparison to private lessons, just due to the nature of group classes. There is simply not enough time to ensure proper technique in everyone.

Combining private instruction with group instruction is my most recommended method of learning. You can learn correct technique in private class, and supplement your patterns and footwork with group classes. This allows you to apply your technique from private class to the group class information, as well as use your private time with the instructor to clean up anything you learned in group class.

Although private instruction seems to be more costly, it truly is the best value. You get so much more out of your time. And if excellence in the area of dance is one of your goals, or you simply want to get going quickly, then you cannot afford to skip the private instruction. If you simply want to be able to move on the floor and have a good time without much attention to smoothness, then group lessons may be the better route for you right now. Whatever your goals, Salsa Pasión delivers the enthusiasm and knowledge to get you there!
